Roku announced today that they intend on bringing Roku boxes to the U.K. and Canada in 2012. In tandem with this announcement, Roku also plans on supporting region specific channels as they continue to expand. Plus, with Netflix having recently expanded to Canada and Latin America, potential Roku consumers will now have access to Netflix's vast library.
For those unfamiliar with Roku boxes, they focus on streaming mainly Internet media to your TV. They support popular media streaming sites such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, Pandora, and over 350 TV channels through the Roku Channel Store.
The Roku line consists of the Roku LT, the Roku 2 HD, the Roku 2 XD, and the flagship Roku 2 XS. We previously reviewed the Roku 2 XD and found it to be a rather formidable and all around great streaming device. The Roku 2 XS didn't quite live up to the precedent set by the Roku 2 XD, but we don't have information on which devices Roku will sell in the UK and Canada so that may not even be an option. Similarly, since Roku hasn't announced which devices will be offered to Canadian and UK consumers, pricing details are also not available. We'll keep you posted as further information develops.
